Ernest Oppenheimer Fund

The Ernest Oppenheimer Fund, administered by the Office of the School of the Physical Sciences, is used for the support of training and research in the broad areas of Surface Chemistry and Physics, and Colloid Science, to promote the advancement of knowledge in these subjects.  The Fund finances the prestigious Ernest Oppenheimer Early Career Research Fellowships and Ernest Oppenheimer PhD Studentships.  In recent years, one or two Fellowships plus one or two Studentships have been awarded annually.  

The Ernest Oppenheimer Fellowship and the Ernest Oppenheimer Studentship are advertised from early November until the application closing date in January, on the University of Cambridge Job Opportunities website, in the ‘Research’ section (Fellowship) and in the ‘Studentships’ section (Studentship).  The Committee of Management of the Ernest Oppenheimer Fund considers applications during February.

 

Ernest Oppenheimer Early Career Research Fellowship

A 3-year fellowship in the broadly interpreted field of Surface Science, including the subjects of Biology, Surface Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science and Nanotechnology.  This Fellowship is intended to provide an opportunity for independent research, although the holder usually works in collaboration with an established research group.  The Fellowship is to be held in Cambridge and taken up on 1 October of the year in which it is awarded.

The Fellowship provides:

  • A minimum starting salary of £36,024 per annum (Grade 7 range is £36,024 to £44,263 p.a.).
  • Up to £20k per annum for research expenses.

Ernest Oppenheimer Studentship

A 3.5-year studentship in the broadly interpreted field of Surface Science, including the subjects of Biology, Surface Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science and Nanotechnology.  This Studentship is to support research projects directly leading to a PhD and is to be held in Cambridge and taken up on 1 October of the year in which it is awarded.

The Studentship provides:

  • A stipend at the current UKRI minimum rate (£18,622 for 2023/24) + £2000 per annum (3.5 years).
  • The University Composition Fee at the home rate (3 years).
  • A contribution towards consumables and travel costs of up to £7k per annum (3 years).
