How can I develop mine?

We all have transferable skills; it is likely that you are more developed in some areas and less in others. To help you with this a School-wide programme of courses has been developed to complement your department’s provision and anything else you do outside of the university that can be counted towards your training. You will have received a copy of the programme from your department at the start of the year.

The most important aspect of the training is that it is relevant to you. Everyone has different needs and only you can asses how much training you need in each of the skills. To help you decide there are a number of workshops in the School programme that help you focus on what and how much you need – ‘Introduction and Training Needs Analysis’ for postgrads and ‘Managing Your Career’ for postdocs. Don’t forget that prospective employers will want to see evidence that you have used these skills in different situations, so think about how you can follow up courses with some practical action.
