Department of Geography
Geography has a long tradition at Cambridge. The first University Lecturer in Geography was appointed in 1888 and the first Reader in 1898. Today the Department is a flourishing and expanding academic community committed to high standards of research. The questions we ask, the philosophies and methodologies we draw upon, embrace the natural and social sciences as well as the humanities. Research is organised within five broadly defined and enabling research clusters: Spaces of Economy and Society, Environmental Processes, Historical and Cultural Geography, Glacial and Quaternary Processes and Society, Environment and Development. Our work has a strongly interdisciplinary nature, embracing the physical, environmental and social sciences and humanities, with research at the interface between society and the natural world giving the Department a key role in this important agenda. The Scott Polar Research Institute is a sub-department of Geography.
